Meet Dr. Ray Caughman, Jr.
Practice Owner, Veterinarian
Decades of Pet Care Experience
Ray grew up in rural Lexington County, South Carolina, surrounded by many animals. He attended Clemson University, graduating with a degree in Animal Science in 1987. In 1991, he received his DVM from the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Throughout 1992, he worked on a large-animal Anesthesia Residency at UGA’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and then took an associate position at an animal hospital in Snellville, Georgia in 1992.
Dr. Caughman has resided in Gwinnett County since 1992, and built and opened Dogwood Animal Hospital in July of 1998. As a veterinarian, he enjoys anesthesia, internal medicine cases, and using bloodwork, x-rays, and ultrasound. Since 2001, he’s been very passionate about the use of a CO2 cutting laser for surgical procedures, which helps to reduce swelling and pain.
At home, Dr. Caughman has a very lazy Bassett hound named Griffin who is terrified of loud noises, thunderstorms, and firecrackers. He also has two housecats named Willie and Bennie who enjoy wrestling each other.
When time permits, Dr. Caughman likes walking, biking, and visiting the beach as often as possible. He also enjoys skeet and sporting clay shooting. In addition, he’s shown Tennessee Walking Horses since he was six years old, and even won the International Amateur Championship in 2002!
