Does Your Dog Have Allergies

May 15 2016

Did you know that dogs can have allergies, just like people? Fido can develop allergies at any stage of his life, and to all sorts of different things. Allergies are no more fun for Man’s Best Friend than they are for us! In this article, a Lawrenceville, GA vet discusses canine allergies.

Signs of Allergies

Itchiness is often a sign of allergies in dogs. If Fido is constantly scratching or chewing himself, he could have allergies. Allergies can cause many skin problems, and/or stubborn ear infections. Red, runny eyes can also be a sign of allergies. Dogs with allergies may burp, wheeze, or snore, and can be a bit prone to flatulence. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by allergies as well. Occasionally, allergies can cause more severe reactions, such as fainting, seizures, comas, or even death, but fortunately these cases are rare.

Common Allergens

Just like people, dogs are often allergic to mold, trees, plants, or pollen. Fido can also react to something in his doggy food, or an ingredient in his shampoo. Fleabites can also cause allergic reactions in our canine pals. Some pups are allergic to certain materials, like rubber or polyester. Others react to fumes, such as cigarette smoke.

Diagnosis and Treatment

While allergies can’t be cured, they can be treated. However, your vet will first need to run some tests to determine exactly what your furry pal is reacting to. For food allergies, Fido may be put on a special diet to pinpoint the culprit. Once you know what your canine buddy is allergic to, you and your vet will be able to discuss specific treatment options. These may range from medication to specific pet products.

Home Care

There are some things you can do at home to keep your furry friend more comfortable. Vacuuming and dusting regularly will help keep your home and air clean. Also, keep an eye on pollen counts, and keep Fido indoors as much as possible when they are high. Dogs often get pollen, mold, and chemicals on their fur when they go outside, so wipe your pup’s paws and belly with a damp cloth daily. Incorporate ear scritches and belly rubs to make this more fun for your four-legged pal.
