Did you know that August 22nd is Take Your Cat To The Vet Day? While we aren’t suggesting that all of our feline patients come in that day, it is important to keep up with your kitty’s veterinary care needs. Of course, visiting us probably isn’t Fluffy’s favorite thing to do. We do all we can to keep our furry friends calm and comfortable, but there are also things you can do to make the appointment easier on your pet. Here, a Grayson, GA vet discusses taking your cat to the vet.
Keep The Carrier Out
If your kitty only sees her carrier just before her appointments, she may bolt for her favorite hiding spot the moment she sees it. Keep the carrier out between appointments. You want Fluffy to think of her carrier as a comfy den, so add blankets and toys, and give her treats and attention near it.
Light Breakfast
Avoid feeding Fluffy just before going on a car ride. If your kitty gets carsick, riding on a full stomach can make her even more nauseous.
Smooth Ride
Cats have their own versions of the laws of physics, so they often don’t know what to make of being in a moving car. If possible, take a route without a lot of bumps, and try to avoid sudden stops and starts.
Kitty Singalong
Playing a radio can help soothe Fluffy. Some kitties also like to ‘sing’ along!
Fresh Air
Keep a window cracked, so Fluffy always has fresh air flowing to her. This can help keep her from feeling nauseous.
Cat Calming Products
If Fluffy is extremely frightened of car rides, ask your vet for advice on using cat-calming products, like collars and sprays.
Furbuster
Cats sometimes shed heavily when they are nervous. This varies from kitty to kitty: some may only shed a little, while others will leave you and your car covered in fur. Brush Fluffy the day before her appointment, and put a blanket down in the car.
Purr Reactivation
When you get back home, offer Fluffy extra cuddles, and perhaps a new toy or a special treat. You’ll have that little motor going again in no time!
