Putting Together a Pet Emergency Kit

The funny thing about emergencies is that you just never know when one might happen—even though pet owners may not want to consider the possibilities, it’s best to be prepared with a pet-specific emergency kit. Learn what to include in your pet’s kit below from a Grayson veterinarian.

First-Aid Items

Of course, you’ll want to pack the essential first-aid items in your pet’s emergency kit. These include gauze and bandages, a disinfectant, nail clippers, scissors, and tape. Ask your vet what other essentials might be needed.

Medical Records

Medical records probably aren’t your first thought when assembling your pet’s emergency kit, but they’re very necessary. If you have to evacuate your home and move to a shelter, your pet’s medical records may be key to keeping your pet with you. In a water-tight bag, put your pet’s most recent medical forms, vaccination records, and proof of ownership.

Medicine

Does your pet take any type of medication regularly? Be sure to pack a supply of it in the emergency kit, and remember to check expiration dates so it doesn’t go bad.

Food

Food and water is essential to pack. Canned food is best, as it will take much longer to spoil. Put a few bottles of fresh water in, as well, and don’t forget a can opener.

Bedding and Toys

You don’t know how long you might have to stay away from home, or exactly what the circumstances will be—as such, it’s a good idea to bring along a pet bed and a few blankets. Pack some of your pet’s favorite toys as well to help her feel more comfortable.

Leash

A leash is an essential item for any pet’s emergency kit—even a cat’s! Depending on the circumstances of your emergency, your pet may be frightened or overwhelmed, and you don’t want her to bolt away from you and get lost. A sturdy leash and secure collar hook-up can be a lifesaver.
