Why Do Dogs Hate Baths?

December 1 2024

Does your dog try to run and hide when he hears the dreaded B-word? If so, he isn’t alone. The great majority of dogs dislike bathing. This is probably not that surprising. Then again, it can be confusing, especially because many puppies like swimming! A local Lawrenceville, GA vet provides some light on this below.

Is It Normal for Dogs to Hate Baths?

We can’t exactly survey our canine patients on this one, but if we could, it’s reasonable to imagine that the great majority would be less than thrilled about baths. However, some dogs are just moderately upset and will often tolerate being cleaned. Others act as if they’re being murdered.

Is It Cruel To Bathe Dogs?

Not at all. It’s actually cruel not to! Despite Fido’s antics, it’s vital to remember that dogs require beauty care. Otherwise, they’ll get dust, filth, and dander all over their fur. That is not only pleasant, but it also interferes with your dog’s fur’s insulating characteristics, making it more difficult for him to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Unkempt puppies are also more likely to get parasites and/or have skin illnesses. Long-haired dogs are also more likely to have mats. These may get really uncomfortable!

How Frequently Should I Bathe My Dog?

The frequency with which you must bathe your canine buddy will vary greatly. A dog with short, sleek fur will need fewer washes than one with fluffy fur that is prone to mats and tangles. Obviously, there is some variation here. If your dog is prone to rolling about in mud puddles, he will require more regular bathing.

Do Dogs Really Feel Better After A Bath?

We all like the salon-fresh sensation, and dogs are no exception! In fact, most dogs appear to like feeling salon-fresh and clean. They just don’t like the method.

Why Do Dogs Hate Baths?

Because each dog is unique, there isn’t a single universal answer to this question. However, there are a few typical possibilities:

Fear Of Being Trapped

Fido’s distaste of bathing may possibly be due to the fact that he has few options. Feeling coerced into anything might put Man’s Best Friend on edge.

Uncertainty

Dogs are frequently suspicious of unfamiliar objects and experiences. Puppies that have never been washed before will be nervous about the experience, simply because it is new and strange. This is why we recommend beginning to bathe Fido when he is still young.

Bad Vibes

Dogs are highly perceptive and can sense our moods and signals. If your pet dislikes bathing, or if your previous dog disliked baths, you are likely to dislike the practice as well. Fido may be responding to subtle cues that you aren’t having fun either, which will do nothing to improve his perspective.

Prior Mishaps

Unfortunately, some of our canine patients have had extremely difficult times in the past. Some, notably rescheduled, were rescued from horrible owners and/or surroundings. Many rescue dogs have been traumatized as a result of previous events. If your pet has been screamed at, rough-handled, or, worse, hit, he may be experiencing doggie PTSD as a result.

That poor association did not have to stem from something awful, though.  Everyday events and small mishaps can do it. Examples include water in the nose; soap in the eye; slips; being scorched by hot water; and strong fragrances.

What Should I Do If My Dog Hates Baths?

You will not be able to resolve this issue by talking to your pet. Fido will probably simply gaze at you with that cute head tilt that puppies do. Instead, you’ll have to focus on improving his view on the situation.

Here are some tips:

  • Be cheerful! Simply speaking with Fido in a soothing tone can help.
  • Timing may also be important here. Try not to bathe your dog while you’re anxious, unhappy, or furious.
  • Make Fido think positively about the experience. Call him into the bathroom, then place him in the tub. When he enters, give him a reward. This should be a high-value treat, comparable to a steak. Then let him go.
  • Be gentle! Simple things, such as keeping the water at a reasonable temperature, may go a long way.
  • Prepare everything before you bring your dog into the bathtub.
  • Don’t get soap in Fido’s eyes!
  • Avoid using soaps and shampoos that are excessively scented. They can be too strong for Fido’s delicate nose!
  • Maintain a regular schedule: If you take proper care of your pet’s coat, bathing may not take long at all.
  • Take it outdoors. In the summer, your dog may enjoy a bath in a kiddie pool or with a hose.
  • Rinse your canine buddy thoroughly!
  • Reward your puppy! Make it a practice to give Fido a new toy or a special treat, like a chew, following wash time.
