Help! My Dog Won't Stop Sneezing

April 1 2021

Our canine pals sneeze sometimes, just like we do. Most often, Fido sneezes because small particles of dust, dirt, grass, or other materials get into his nasal passages. After all, Fido uses that cute nose to explore the world. But if your dog sneezes frequently, or won’t stop sneezing, there may be something going on.

Here are some of the most common reasons that dogs sneeze:

 Play Sneezing

Fido often sneezes when he’s playing. When your pet is playing with you or with another canine, you may see him sneeze a few times. Experts believe this is pups’ way of showing other dogs that their playful behavior is good-natured, rather than threatening. Watch out for the play-sneeze the next time your pooch gets riled up. It’s super cute.

Allergies

Your four-legged pal may also sneeze is because of allergies. Environmental allergens, like pollen, dander, mold, dust and dust mites, dirt, and much more can make Fido pretty miserable. Allergies can cause symptoms like a runny nose, watery eyes, and—you guessed it—excessive sneezing. Even food allergies can cause sneezing. Your dog could be reacting to the protein source or things like soy or dairy in their diet.

Talk to your vet if you think your canine buddy might be suffering from allergies. Allergy medication might be necessary for your pup to feel better.

Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome (BAOS)

Brachycephalic dogs (those with squashed faces and bulging eyes like the Pekingese, French and English Bulldog, pugs, Boxers, and the Boston terrier) are prone to breathing trouble. This is because of their narrow nasal passages and unique airway structures. Some common symptoms of Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome include wheezing, snorting, and sneezing. If you have a Brachycephalic dog, ask your vet for specific care tips.

Reverse Sneezing

In addition to normal sneezes, dogs also “reverse sneeze” on occasion. What’s that all about? This happens when Fido snorts air into his nose quickly. The result sounds almost like a sneeze. It can be alarming, but it’s perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. It’s most common in smaller dogs and Brachycephalic breeds.

Medical Issues

Medical problems like kennel cough, respiratory infections, and nasal mites, can also be the root cause of Fido’s sneezing. If you can’t determine another cause of your canine pal’s behavior, set up an appointment with your vet clinic.

Contact your local vet clinic for more information on your dog’s sneezing.
