Doggy Paw Care Tips

February 1 2020

Have you looked at your pet’s feet lately? Fido’s paws are crucial to his health and well-being. After all, without them he couldn’t run after his favorite toy or jump for joy to greet you! Read on as a local Grayson, GA vet offers some helpful tips on keeping your dog’s furry feet healthy.

Keep Those Claws Clipped

Overgrown nails can be very problematic for our canine companions! For one thing, they’re quite uncomfortable to walk on. Your furry pal may adjust his gait a bit to compensate. This puts a lot of stress on his bones and joints, which can cause problems over time. Plus, long claws often snag on things. This can cause painful rips and even infections. If you don’t feel comfortable clipping your dog’s claws yourself, just call us to schedule a pawdicure.

Inspect Fido’s Feet

Get into the habit of checking out your canine friend’s paws regularly. You want to look for foreign objects, as sometimes things get stuck between Fido’s toes. Keep an eye out for ticks as well: sometimes they latch on to dogs’ paws.

Moisturize Your Dog’s Paw Pads

Fido’s paw pads can get dry and cracked. Use paw balm or wax to moisturize them. This will also help protect your cute pet’s feet from hot or harsh surfaces.

Be Careful In Hot Weather

Georgia summers can be absolute scorchers. Pay attention to where you bring your dog when it’s really hot out, and try to keep your canine buddy on soft ground as much as you can. Here’s a general rule of thumb: if a surface is too hot for you to walk barefoot on, it’s too hot for Fido!

Take Care After Fido Has Been Swimming

Your pup’s paws will be extra delicate after he has been swimming. Fido can quickly get painful blisters and abrasions when his feet are wet. Keep your pooch on soft ground when he gets out of the water.

Hack

Does your four-legged friend hate having his feet touched? Teach Fido that he’ll get a yummy treat every time he gives you his paw. Opt for something special, like a bit of bacon or steak. This may work wonders on your dog’s mindset!
