Pampering a Senior Cat

October 1 2019

Is your cat in or near her senior years? As your feline buddy ages, she’ll start to slow down, and she’ll gradually lose interest in playing and making mischief. This is a very special time in your kitty’s life. While Fluffy’s basic needs won’t change, you may want to take a few steps to keep her comfortable and happy in her golden years. A Grayson, GA vet offers some advice on pampering an older cat below.

All The Beds

By the time Fluffy becomes a senior—which in kitty years, translates to about ten years old—she’ll be a master napper. Older cats can spend as much as 20 hours a day snoozing! Set out lots of soft beds for your drowsy furball to look adorable in. A comfy window seat with a good view will also go a long way towards keeping your feline pal purring.

Playtime

Your kitty won’t be as frisky as she once was, but you can likely still tempt her into playing, even if only for a few minutes at a time. Daily play sessions will be great for Fluffy both mentally and physically!

Veterinary Care

Senior cats are at elevated risk of developing certain health issues, such as heart disease and diabetes. Keep up with your kitty’s veterinary care! Fluffy may need to come in more often now, so ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. In between appointments, keep an eye out for signs of illness. If you notice anything wrong, call your vet right away.

Senior Facilities

Jumping and climbing will become increasingly difficult for your kitty as she ages. Make your home more comfortable for Fluffy by setting out pet ramps or stairs and getting her a litterbox with low sides.

Grooming

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body as she ages. You may notice her fur starting to look a bit unkempt. Help her out by brushing her gently to remove dead fur, dust, and tangles from her coat.

Purrs and Cuddles

Love is the magic ingredient in any pet care routine. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure that she feels loved and safe. Just be very gentle when you pick your cat up or put her down.
