Leaving Your Dog Home Alone

September 15 2019

Dogs are very affectionate, and get extremely attached to their humans. Given the choice, Fido would no doubt opt to stay by your side 24/7. However, your pet can’t go everywhere with you. Sooner or later, you’ll have to leave him at home. Read on as a Grayson, GA vet offers some advice on leaving your pooch home by himself.

Toys/Stimulation

Toys are very important to our canine friends. They help keep dogs occupied and out of trouble, and also offer them beneficial mental stimulation. Puzzle toys and treat-dispensing toys are great for when Fido is alone, as they can keep him occupied for hours. Your cute pet will also appreciate having a comfy spot before a window with a good view, so he can watch birds and squirrels.

Morning Workout

Before you leave, take your furry pal for a walk, and spend a few minutes playing with him. Ideally, you want your pooch to be a bit tired afterwards. That way, Fido will be ready for a nap, and will hopefully spend a chunk of the morning just sleeping.

Doggyproofing

Dogs sometimes act up when they are left alone. Your pup may chew or dig inappropriately, or get into the trash. Our canine friends sometimes do this to express and cope with their anxiety and distress at being left alone. This is known as separation anxiety. Ask your vet for tips on helping your dog cope. In the meantime, make your home safe for your furry friend by removing or securing anything he shouldn’t eat or chew on. This includes things like toxic plants; chemicals; medicine; shoes; small or sharp objects; and plastic bags.

Comforts

Always leave your pup plenty of fresh water. If Fido tends to drain his bowl dry in a few gulps, get an automated waterer and/or set out multiple water stations. Your dog may also appreciate having a TV or radio playing. The sound of music and voices will soothe him, and keep him from feeling lonely. Leave your climate control on as well, so he doesn’t get hot or cold.

Timing

Most dogs can stay alone for about 9 hours at the most. If you’ll be gone longer than that, consider hiring a dog walker or enrolling Fido in doggy daycare.
