How to Set Up a Hamster Cage

January 15 2015

Have you decided to bring a hamster into your home? Hamsters are among the most popular pocket pets. These little cuties have a lot of great qualities; they’re very cute, docile, easy to care for, and inexpensive. With all those benefits, it’s no surprise that hamsters are so often chosen as pets. Setting up your hamster’s cage correctly will go a long way towards keeping your little one happy and healthy, so in order for your hamster to truly thrive, he will need a proper habitat. In this article, your local vet Grayson goes over some basics on how to set up Hammie’s cage correctly.

Choosing the Cage

There are several options as far as what type of cage your pet can have. Wire cages with plastic bottoms are very popular, and are a great option for your little pet. Another good option is a converted plastic storage bin. Glass aquariums are also acceptable. Whatever type of cage you choose, make sure that at least one side is made of wire or mesh, because proper ventilation is very important.

Substrate

Once you have picked out a cage, you’ll need to add substrate. Again, there are lots of options to choose from, and they all have their own pros and cons. Aspen, corn cob, and paper flakes are a few good choices. Avoid using clumping cat litter, or substrates made from pine or cedar, as these can be dangerous to little ones. You’ll also need to add bedding material on top of the substrate. You can use ripped up toilet paper or paper towels as bedding.

Toys

You’ll need to provide your little pet with some toys to keep him from becoming bored. Exercise wheels are a classic option, and will help your furball get some exercise. Just don’t choose a wire wheel, as these can hurt your pet’s feet. Seesaws, wooden ladders, tunnels, wood arches, and nest boxes are some other things your pet will appreciate. Hamsters also like sand baths, so you can also a little bathhouse for your pet to enjoy.

Food

You can use dishes to feed your hamster, or you can scatter his food on clean substrate. If you do choose to feed your pet out of bowls, keep an eye on plastic dinnerware, as your hamster might chew it and slowly ingest his plate! Hammie will also need a constant supply of fresh water. Hanging bottles are a great way to keep your little buddy hydrated.
